|In Cornwall is the village of Charlestown. This
is a tourist village
and a port. It is quite near to St Austell.
In the eighteenth century AD the village of West Polmear was a fishing village. In 1799 Charlestown was given the name Charles's town which eventually became Charlestown. When Charles Rashleigh died in 1823 this had an effect on Charlestown because of the adverse state of the Ashleigh Estate financial position. In 1825 Charlestown Estate became the owners of the leasehold property in Charlestown which had belonged to the Ashleigh Estate and bought more and became the owners of the port and some areas around.
There is a hotel and a gift shop in the village and there is also a primary school.
An interesting point about Charlestown is that it has been used in the past for making films amd some of the film Alice in Wonderland was filmed in Charlestown.
The Cornish name for Charlestown is Porth meur.
Chalrsetown is also near two other popular tourist places of Looe and Polperro.
