KILKHAMPTON

Kilkhampton is a village in North Cornwall near Bude.  Bude is of course very well known and is approximately four miles from Kilkhampton..  The Cornish name for the village isTreglgh.    Kilkhampton is near to Devon but of course Cornish used to be spoken in parts of Devon years ago.
Like some other places in Cornwall kilkhampton was mentioned in the Doomsday  Book but it was referred to as  Chilchetone.
Penstowe Castle is near the village and this  castle was from Norman times  as a motte and bailey.

There is a church in Kilkhampton dedicated to St James the Great  and it is over 450 years old and has a Norman doorway. Years ago in Norman times when populations were so low it is possible that what we think of as just a village may have been considered  as a much more important place in those days.

It is quite near to the old village of Stratton and to the town of Holsworthy which is an old town in Devon which also has a church. It may be that years ago a church would be sited on a hill as a landmark and as a guide to those trying to find their directions while travelling..
