Perranporth is only a small resort but is a
popular tourist destination.
The Cornish name for this resort is Porthpyran which sounds
quite
similar to the English name which of course is not always the case in
Cornwall place names The name comes from yet another Saint , this time
being St Piran. It may even be that he was responsible for a church in
Perranzabuloe in the seventh century AD. There is a chapel in
Perranporth. This popular resort is
approximately 6 miles from
Newquay .
As regards distances it is quite a handy area as a base for exploring
the bottom parts of Cornwall too.
The village has shops but it is small. It holds an inter
celtic event in October each year.
There were famous Poldark stories written by the author
Winston Grahamn which refer to the area near
Perranporth.
